The Curriculum

The Newton College curriculum has a constructivist view of teaching and learning where we believe that learning happens inside the heads of learners - where they have to construct new knowledge, skills and attitudes – albeit with our skilled teachers input and help. The heart of our curriculum is the knowledge of individual learners' needs and quality teacher–pupil relationships.

The curriculum aims to enable all our pupils to become:

  • Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • Confident individuals who are able to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

We support a classroom culture of risk taking, learning from failure and mistakes, and we value and reward effort. Tasks are challenging and success criteria, questioning and feedback are used to advance and support learning. We aim to create 'well rounded and successful citizens' by promoting the education of the whole person. This is articulated by the IB Learner Profile of the whole person as a lifelong learner:
