Education for Sustainable Development

Newton College is committed to the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as established in our motto "Enough, for everyone, always". It is a philosophy that implies the well-being of all living creatures and the natural environment, for this generation and future ones. Sustainable development is one of the most transcendental concepts of our curriculum. The framework of our ESD programme is based on eight doorways, which establish the following goals and aspirations:

Walking to school contributes to reducing environmental pollution.

1) Energy and water:

Newton College will be a model of energy efficiency, renewable energy and water conservation, through the implementation of the use of solar power and biomass, and the isolation and recycling of grey water.

2) Transportation:

Newton College will be a model of sustainable transport, promoting walking and the use of buses, minibuses, carpool and bicycles.

3) Green Areas and Architecture:

Whenever possible, Newton College will design its facilities according to the principles of green architecture. It will sustainably develop its green areas, protecting the species of flora and fauna in danger of extinction.

4) Food and Beverages:

Newton College will be a model provider of healthy, local and sustainable food, showing a substantial commitment to the environment, advocating social responsibility and promoting the welfare of animals.

5) Purchases and Residues:

Newton College will be a model of waste minimisation and sustainable procurement, by utilising the most eco-friendly goods and services, and reducing, reusing, repairing and recycling as much as possible.

6) Global Dimension:

Newton College will be a model of global citizenship, enriching our educational mission with activities that improve the lives of people in other parts of the world.

7) Local Welfare:

Newton College will be a model of citizenship within our local community, enriching our educational mission with activities that improve the environment and the quality of life of the local population.

8) Social Inclusion:

Newton College will be a model of social inclusion, allowing all students to participate fully in school life while instilling respect for human rights, freedoms, cultures and creative expression.
