Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to Newton MUN 2026. My name is Micaela Sanchez and it is more than an honor to act as this year’s secretary-general. Today, in a world where many nod in agreement yet few truly align, MUN becomes more essential than ever, preparing future generations with the confidence to make a difference.

While I like to say my MUN career started in 2023, it actually goes back to a time of uncertainty, when many of our experiences took place virtually. Although different from what MUN would later become for me, it sparked a curiosity that led me back to the club in 2023, when I attended my first in-person conference. I fell in love with the sensation right before speaking: your skin chilling, your upper body tightening and you the goosebumps crawling up your arms while a strange pressure settles your chest (A bit similar to being in a rollercoaster, except your stomach feels slightly less hollow).

Over the years, MUN has given me invaluable experiences: lifelong friendships, inspiring role models, and a passion for debate rooted in respect and preparation. Serving as Secretary-General has allowed me to see MUN from a broader perspective, and I have made it my personal goal to ensure that this conference is not merely another event on your calendar, but an experience that leaves a lasting and meaningful impact on your life.

I firmly believe that, no matter how many conferences a delegate attends, there will always be one or two that shape them profoundly and remain unforgettable. For me, those were LNAG 2023, where I debated the effects of globalization, and MRMUN 2024, where we simulated the 2008 financial crisis. Though they occurred at different moments in my life, both were transformative—helping me discover my passion, refine my style, and define the kind of delegate I aspired to become.

As you step into a committee, I encourage you to challenge yourselves. Be kind, be mindful, and above all, be humble. When you are in debate, give it your all; when you step out, remember that the experience is about growth, not perfection. On behalf of the Secretariat, I would also like to sincerely thank all Faculty Advisors for their dedication and guidance, which make this conference possible. We have carefully designed our committees to ensure that each of you finds a topic that excites and challenges you. We hope you enjoy Newton MUN 2026, and we look forward to seeing you in debate.
