The PYP at Newton College focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance. These themes are explored conceptually using knowledge derived from all subject areas, a wide range of approaches to learning, and calling on students to develop the attributes and attitudes of the IB learner profile.

Our programme at Newton College is structured around conceptual understandings and a constructivist approach. To arrive at these conceptual understandings of the world we live in, the PYP identifies inquiry, action and reflection as essential components in our students’ learning journey.
Sustained inquiry forms the centre piece of the written, taught and assessed curriculum in the PYP at Newton College. In their journey in our programme students are given many opportunities to experience inquiry in different ways and in different forms from hands-on and play-based inquiry, to more academic inquiry using our technology and library resources. In this approach, prior knowledge and experience establish the basis for new learning, and our students’ own curiosity and wonderings provide the fuel for learning that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant.
Action taken by pupils in the PYP at Newton is an outcome of their learning and takes place at home, as well as in classrooms, school, community and the broader world. “Action” involves learning by making responsible choices. We see action as a chance for our students to make contributions to local and global communities, as well as an opportunity for them to apply their learning in real-world contexts and gain valuable and unforgettable life experiences.
At Newton College, critical reflection is the process by which curiosity and experience lead our students to deeper understanding and personal growth. As reflective thinkers, our pupils must become critically aware of their approaches to learning from an early age. This is an important step in becoming independent learners, who continually strive to better themselves and become successful and confident global citizens.
In the PYP at Newton College, assessment is ongoing, varied and integral to the curriculum. Assessment may be formal or informal, formative or summative, internal or external. Students also benefit by learning how to assess their own work and the work of others. Every student keeps a portfolio of work which stays with them throughout their time in the PYP. This portfolio is a collection of work displaying growth in student understanding, skills and attitudes along with particular moments of which they are most proud.
Newton PYP students demonstrate what they know, understand and can do through consolidations of learning, culminating with the PYP exhibition. The entire school community may be involved in providing feedback and support as they demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and mastery of skills.
