PLAN VERDE

OUR 10 DOORWAYS
GREEN PROJECTS

There have been a lot of ideas flowing about how we can make Newton a sustainable school. The idea to get as many people involved as possible from the whole school community has got off to a promising start. The invitation to place ideas in the Plan Verde blog was well received and included many interesting ideas, a number of which have now been developed into projects. Committees were made to develop these different projects, and it was gratifying to see teachers, students, parents as well as staff from administration and maintenance getting together to make action plans to put them into practice.
The idea of raising consciousness about the things we can do to counteract the effects of global warming has been central to our thinking and planning during this year and we have made the most of all opportunities in the curriculum to make this important area more prominent. We have also made the most of several important activities in order to bring home to students and parents the importance of “going green”.

Our Plan Verde committee has been busy organizing and carrying out different projects in 10 major areas of sustainable activity (our 10 doorways). These are:

1. WATER: To make the best use and distribution of water.
2. ENERGY: To ensure the efficient use of electricity and exploring alternative forms of renewable energy.
3. CHEMICALS: To reduce the consumption of chemicals and to improve the system of disposal in all areas of the school.
4. WASTE: To reduce consumption of all materials and improve the systems of disposal in all areas of the school.
5. RECYCLING: To find the means of re-using and recycling the maximum number of used products and at the same time create entrepreneurial opportunities.
6. PURCHASING: To ensure that products, as much as possible, are purchased locally and produced organically, with minimum packaging and from companies that support fair trade.
7. GREEN AREAS: To make better use of our green areas with viable ecological solutions and to increase the use and quality of our Amazon study centre (Sachavacayoc).
8. GREEN ARCHITECTURE: To use natural resources effectively in the design of future school buildings and to make practical improvements to existing structures.
9. HEALTH AND SAFETY: To encourage the school community to become ethical consumers of food and to care more about their own health and well-being.
10. TRANSPORT: To reduce vehicle contamination and congestion and to promote physical exercise.
