LOWER SCHOOL SPORTS DAY

Each year, our Lower School Sports Day has a theme. This year the theme was "Save the World" and all the games and competitions planned had an ecological theme such as, "Cleaning the Lake" and “Reforesting our Forests”. While students played and enjoyed themselves, a message was transmitted in each activity to stress our personal responsibility to make a difference to the world. Of course, the day was also about having fun and participating in good-natured healthy competition. The winner was Windsor, but closely followed by Tudor!

THE HOUSE SYSTEM
The House system continues to be one of the great traditions of Newton College. It provides participation, cooperation, fair play and healthy competition. In Upper School there are many events, some having been on the calendar since Newton had an Upper School, including football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, swimming and cross-country.
Other events have been introduced over the years: rugby was introduced in 1999 as seven-a-side competitions with two levels: senior and junior Upper school boys. It has been a popular event that has paralleled the development of this exciting and physical sport in Peru. In 2009 it was extended to become ten-a-side. In 2007 handball was introduced for the girls.
Debating is another activity that has been expanding in Peru over the last decade. In Newton it became a House event in 2006. The Newton Scavenge became a House event in 1999 and remains a popular event where the students have to find, look up and devise answers to many difficult questions (this was discontinued in 2009 but we hope that it will be revived). A Science competition was begun in 2008 and a House Quiz with teams on the stage began in 2009.
It is perhaps this mixture of traditional and new events that keeps the House system so popular.
