FORM VI DINNER
|
| The IB pupils in Form VI returned to school one more time as a group on Friday 4th December for the traditional Form VI dinner. It is always enjoyable to see the IB pupils share this final time together in the company of all their teachers many of whom commented that the atmosphere this year was particularly positive and we noted a real feeling of solidarity among the group. Giulia Ciliotta and Gonzalo Cortez spoke very movingly and wittily about the challenges of the IB and how the group dealt with these and in the process came to learn a lot about themselves. They are, indeed, a group of very special young people with myriad talents and qualities and we know they face the next phase of their lives with the confidence gained from accepting the IB challenge. Good luck, Form VI. |
| INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY |
| WORLD SCHOOLS DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP |
From February 8th - 19th our students, Giulia Ciliotta and Marielle Alvino, will be at the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) in Doha, Qatar. Giulia will be one of the five students representing Peru and Marielle has been invited by the Peruvian team as an observer in preparation for the 2011 WSDC in Scotland.
In the 2008 WSDC in the USA, Peru finished in 22nd place out of 39 competing countries. In the 2009 championship in Greece, in which Giulia participated, Peru finished in 10th place out of 39 countries.
These are excellent results considering that all the debates are in English, a second language for Peruvian students, but the first language of most other competing teams (England, Scotland, Ireland, USA, Australia, etc)
We wish Giulia, Marielle and the Peruvian team a lot of success in Qatar. |

A special assembly for Lower and Upper School was held to celebrate International Peace Day. Presented almost entirely by pupils, the assembly focused on why, if we want to achieve peace, we have to begin with ourselves, our school and our local communities.
Pupils from 3rd Grade emphasized that harmony begins in the playground and that we should stop all forms of anti-social behaviour. 5th Grade pupils then presented examples of how people have contributed to world peace through poetry and music. A Form II pupil read out an emotive personal reflection on the effects of bullying. Form III students showed work done with 3rd Grade pupils on the theme of respect for oneself and for others. Three IBDP History pupils then performed a thought-provoking short play about what peace meant to an army officer, a businessman and a hippy. The French Department narrated what peace meant to a Muslim. Finally, there was an explanation of the significance of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind", which was sung by Mr. Buck who was accompanied by two pupils and a colleague on guitars.
Our Early Years pupils also celebrated International Peace Day in their campus by singing "Heal the World" and "Color Esperanza". Through their drawings they communicated how tolerance, dialogue, justice and respect are the foundations for a better world. They emphasized that peace starts with everyday habits such as sharing toys, working happily in groups and listening respectfully to each other.
Mr. David Bamford, Executive Officer of the LAHC, read a passage from the bible related to the theme of peace and the assembly finished with two gestures symbolizing friendship: shaking hands and giving hugs. |
