5TH GRADE EXHIBITION LOOKS AT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
This year the 5th Grade Exhibition looked at the way our choices and actions can effect the environment. As a result, under the name "Earth Alert" twenty groups of three or four students worked on a wide variety of themes. Some groups looked at wider issues such as pollution in the sea and deforestation. One group was interested in looking at the contamination from the processing of metals in La Oroya, and travelled to this town to find out first hand information about this serious health problem for local people. Other projects were more closely linked to action and the things which can be done to make a real difference. A number of groups worked to develop further recycling in the school, encouraging students to recycle paper, plastic and even old cellular telephones.
One group devised a way of saving water, a simple but effective measure. The idea was to put a brick in all the toilet water tanks. The toilets still flush effectively but now use less water, something we could also try out in our homes! Another group looked at the idea of solar power and as a result, a consultant has been brought into school to see how the school can perhaps adopt this alternative for generating electricity and heating the new swimming pool.
As part of the IB CAS programme, the Science Department organised a project in which IB students worked under the supervision of Dr Bruggers and Dr Ash to devise a system of purifying the water which enters our lake from the River Rimac. This has involved the creation of water channels through which the dirty water passes and is then filtered through special plants which have the quality of drawing out impurities in the water.
It is hoped that children involved in these projects will continue working with these ideas next year and will form an active part of "Plan Verde", the name given to the whole school project which has the aim of making the school as environmentally friendly and efficient as possible during the next few years. The plans have already started but we will not rest until we are a truly green school.
