South American Rugby Championship From the 4th to 11th November, Newton College was host to the South American Rugby Championship organised by the Peruvian Sports Institute. On this occasion, the teams from group B in South America participated: Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru.
In the first game, Peru narrowly lost to the favourites, Brazil, 24-15. In the second game Peru recovered to beat Colombia 13-9. In the final game Peru beat Venezuela 26-13 and finished 2nd in the championship, behind Brazil.
In the Peruvian National team there were four Old Newtonians: Maser Madueño (Prom II), Gustavo Alarco (Prom VIII), Jorge Ugaz and Daniel Cino (Prom XII). The school was congratulated on the organisation of this event and on the enthusiastic atmosphere it created to motivate the Peruvian team.
