International
Baccalaureate Courses
The
English Dept. offers three of the four I.B. English courses (Ab Initio
is only for beginners). Together, these courses cover the needs of all
our I.B. students, from those with an upper-intermediate level to native
speakers.

English
A1
This
is a course for native speakers or for foreign students whose best
second language is English. Many bilingual Peruvians have taken this
course as well, some with excellent results. English A1 is primarily
an English literature course, with a generous amount of translated
world literature texts as well. The classes are usually small, and
provide a greater cultural mix than do others. |

English
A2
This
course is designed for bilingual students, or students with an advanced
level of English. Literature is an important element in the course,
but not the only element. Students also investigate different topics
in detail, such as global issues or the mass media. They are exposed
to a wide variety of texts and are expected to write and speak in
a number of different contexts and styles. For an increasing number
of American universities, a passing mark in English A2 fulfills the
English requirement for foreign students, and can replace the TOEFL. |

English
B
Not
all of our students are completely bilingual. For various reasons,
some are still at the upper-intermediate stage when they start the
IB programmes. This course is especially designed for these students.
Language accuracy and vocabulary expansion are stressed in English
B. Students are exposed to an increasing variety of authentic texts
and taught practical strategies for understanding them. They also
learn to write other types of texts, such as speeches, letters, and
magazine articles. While a passing mark this course does not usually
fulfill the language requirements for entrance into American universities,
it does exempt students from second language courses in most Peruvian
universities. |
