Aims and Objectives
General Aims
- To teach students
how to read, write, speak, and understand the English language well
enough to be considered bilingual when they graduate.
- To develop corollary
skills associated with language learning, such as dictionary use, note-taking
and essay writing.
- To introduce and
develop an appreciation for the culture of English-speaking countries.
- To develop social
skills through communicative activities.
- To develop intellectual
skills through the use of stimulating materials from a wide variety
of sources.
- To actively encourage
the use of English as a communicative tool throughout the school.
- To provide linguistic
support for other subjects taught in English.
General Objectives
By the time a student
graduates from Newton, he/she should:
- Have enough English
skills in all four areas to be considered bilingual.
- Have passed the
two main Cambridge exams (PET and IGCSE), plus at least one of the three
IB English exams (A1, A2, and B).
- Be able to communicate
easily and effectively wherever English is widely spoken.
- Have a greater
understanding of English-speaking cultures.
- Be able to study
at a university in an English-speaking country.
- To have enjoyed
and been stimulated the challenge being immersed into an 'English only'
environment for a large portion of their school career.
