EXTENDED CURRICULUM

In addition to the formal academic curriculum Newton College offers its students a wide selection of co-curricular activities which form part of the extended curriculum. These activities aim to allow the students the opportunity to develop a talent or interest which will enrich their educational experience and/or to carry out field work related to a programme of study. The majority of these activities take place from 3.15 – 4.45 p.m. on Monday to Friday or at the weekends. The ones currently available are:

1. Sports

The school’s P.E. teachers and specialist coaches train the students in the following sports:

  • Basketball
  • Athletics
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Volleyball
  • Gymnastics
  • Tae kwon do
  • Swimming (Term 1 only)

In all sports the emphasis is on the learning of skills, teamwork and fair play. The school takes part in as many competitions as possible so that all students (not just the most skilful) have the opportunity to take part in healthy competition. Once a year the school organises its own tournament, the Newton Cup, which usually lasts 6 weeks and convenes hundreds of participants aged 5-17.

The school encourages and supports student participation in all sports and in recent years Newton students have represented their country in golf, judo, tennis and rowing.

2. Dance

The school has 3 major dance clubs:

Ballet In this club the students learn the basic techniques and skills of classical and modern ballet. At present there are 4 ballet teachers who organise the groups according to the levels and ages of the participants.

Folklore In this club the students learn Peruvian dances from the coast, sierra and jungle, as well as Peruvian customs and traditions, all represented by: marinera norteña, danzas negras, andean music and music from the amazonía peruana.

Modern In this club the students learn different classes of modern dance that are popular nationally and internationally. "Salsa, cumbia, lambada" form part of the repertoire.

Participation in public performances is encouraged and the dance clubs take part in school events such as assemblies, concerts, musicals, the "Fiestas Patrias" celebration, the annual school festival ("Kermesse"). In addition, the clubs participate in inter-school festivals and competitions.

3. The Scouts

The Scouts Group "La Molina 88" was formed at the school 4 years ago. Students from the ages of 7 to 15 participate in the weekly reunions of the cubs and scouts troops. As well as learning the basic aims and principles of the Scouts movement the different troops take part in events of civic importance, community service projects and outdoor pursuits (camping trips, treks, jungle expeditions).

At the beginning of the year nine members of the Group went with their leaders to the World Jamboree held in Chile.

4. Drama Club

This club is an extension of the drama programme that is part of the formal curriculum. It is available to all the students who wish to take part, either on-stage or back-stage, in one of the annual productions. The club meets during the week and at weekends, depending on the need for rehearsals.

The Drama Club puts on two major productions each year, one in English and one in Spanish. In recent years these have been: Singing in the Rain, Bugsy Malone, The Crucible, Grease, All you need is Love, Scrooge. This year the production will be Animal Farm.

In the last two years the Drama Club has also participated in the One-Act Play Festival organised by the British Schools of Lima. Last year the students gave a very polished performance of The Little Prince.

5.  The Houses System

As in many British schools around the world there is a system of Houses at Newton College. On entering 2nd Grade students are placed in one of the four Houses: Lancaster, Tudor, Windsor, York (named after British royal families). The House system aims to foster team spirit amongst the students and to allow all of them to participate in the numerous House competitions that take place. These include competitions in:

  • Sport: swimming, hockey, basketball, athletics, baseball, football, rugby, volleyball, cross-country
  • The arts: drama, painting, creative writing
  • Cultural: general knowledge, chess, public speaking

House Captains are chosen in each House in each year group. These students help Housemasters with their leadership and organisational skills.

6.  The Debating Society

Students from Form II to Form IV are invited to form part of this society which aims to develop those skills and techniques that prove effective in public speaking and debating. The society takes part in debates against the other British schools of Lima. The debates are carried out in English and reflect topical issues of the age group ("Homework is a waste of time", "Tobacco advertising should be banned", "Ignorance is Bliss" etc).

The society has a very enthusiastic group of members who have obtained excellent results to date.

7.  Community Service

The school’s formal programmes emphasise the concept of service to the community. As well as in-house events such as plastic and paper recycling, students also take part in projects out of school. The younger students help our sister schools, Huaycán and La Libertad in the Cieneguilla valley, with collections of funds and materials to improve their infrastructure. The older students take part in the C.A.S. projects of the I.B. Diploma Programme. At present these include helping with an orphanage and a home for street children, in a children’s hospital and in a nursery school, children suffering from Downs syndrome and children of our own maintenance personnel. All students in Forms IV and V are expected to devote at least 150 hours of their own time to community service work.

8.  Field Trips

As part of the academic programmes students are given the opportunity to complete part of their course-work on field trips. In Upper School the following field trips are organised:

Form I
