The curriculum at Newton College is an amalgam of the best of the
Peruvian national curriculum and the programmes of the International
Baccalaureate. The school was the first in Peru to offer the
International Baccalaureate
Diploma Programme (1987)
and at present is reviewing the I.B. Primary Years Programme for the
students aged 3 11 and the I.B. Middle Years Programme for
students aged 11 16 for possible implementation in the near
future. The curriculum aims to be as broad, balanced and coherent
as possible taking into account all the aims of national programmes
and enriching them with the global perspective of the international
programmes.
One
of our aims is to offer a truly bilingual education and therefore
the curriculum is delivered in both English and Spanish. Wherever
possible 50% of the courses are taught in English and 50% in Spanish,
however, this can vary according to the needs of the students. For
example, in Kindergarten the students are immersed in English and
approximately 80% of instruction is delivered in that language.
In Upper School the students are set in Mathematics and the Science
subjects (i.e. placed with other students of a similar ability in
that subject) and this could lead to the situation whereby up to
80% of their courses are taught in English.
In
many subjects class groups are divided into smaller groups so that
students may be given more individual attention. This occurs in
subjects such as Music, Physical Education, Computing, English,
Maths and Science. For those students with limited knowledge in
either Spanish or English language support is provided. For those
students in the younger grades with special learning difficulties
specialist help is provided.
Students
progress is closely monitored and formal evaluation takes place
every term. The methods of evaluation vary according to the nature
of the subject and to the objectives of the course. Continuous assessment
and feedback are considered very important elements in the learning
process. Reports are given to parents three times a year and meetings
between teachers and parents can be arranged at the request of either.
Students
from Kindergarten to 6th Grade have to obtain a pass
mark in two of the three fundamental subjects (English, Spanish,
Maths) to be promoted to the following Grade. From Form I to Form
V the student is promoted to the following year provided he/she
does not obtain a fail mark in more than one course.
The
table below illustrates which subjects are taught in each grade.
