LEVELS - UPPER SCHOOL
Upper School
Overview:

Our Upper School level comprises students from 6th Grade to Form VI, aged 11 to 18, who develop from children to adolescents to young adults. It is a transitional stage which is marked by important developmental characteristics, followed by intellectual, physical, emotional, and social changes. Upper School is intended to guide and support the pupils throughout this period of continuous change.

We can accommodate up to 24 students per class in each year group and classes are from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Upper School curriculum aims to offer a modern, humanistic, technological education combining academic excellence, sound character formation, and a sense of service to the community. It draws on the best of Peruvian, British, and international educational systems, especially that of the International Baccalaureate Organization.

As in our Lower School level, both Spanish and English are not only subjects in their own right but are also mediums of instruction. Most pupils will receive 50% of tuition in English and 50% in Spanish, although this can vary depending on the pupil's ability in each language and on the subject being taught. By the end of their education at Newton, most pupils are expected to be proficient in their second language and able to continue their studies in a country where the language is regarded as the mother tongue.

In addition to high academic standards and intellectual rigour, Upper School promotes the development of the individual potential and talents of each pupil. Emphasis is placed on the educational experience of the pupil and its relationship to responsible citizenship and the concept of community, both within the school as well as in the national and international realities that exist outside of the classroom. Respect for intellect, culture, and diversity through the formation of critical thinkers, and enhancing moral and ethical values are key qualities in the Upper School´s educational philosophy.

Pupils study an Intermediate Years Programme (IYP) in 6th Grade, Form I and Form II, which covers a broad range of subjects building on their studies in Lower School. In Forms III and IV students will start to specialize a little more by choosing a number of options for their IGCSE Courses which culminate in final external examinations at the end of Form IV.

In their last two years of Upper School, pupils have the opportunity to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme. This is a rigorous pre-university course which is widely recognized by peruvian universities and around the world.
